You might need to do that manually. Or reset the device. Also hold down the sleep/wake button on top and the home screen button for a few seconds until the system say slide for reset or power off.
Also it might be the connecting cable, check if its the original

Are following the right instruction/have right boxes checked?
Have you successfully synced from that iTunes library before?
Any errors when you sync?
