Two things to consider.
First. Do you have domestic (or travel) insurance thar covers breakages?
Secondly. Apple do not repair iPads. They will replace them with refurbished models.
The replacement will carry the usual warranty.
If you have insurance which covers breakage then clearly this is the way to go. If you find some geek to repair it, it would be at your risk.

What you'd have is an out of warranty replacement. WHere you pay a fee and exchange your broken iPad for a refurbished replacement (which will be the same model you have). THe fee starts at 249 and goes up depending on size and model
You can get it repaired cheaper at other places but one thing to consider, if the place you choose isn't apple authorized you will void any warranty you have left. (although since youhave a 2, you can't have too much more left)

Currently Being ModeratedApr 24, 2013 5:45 AM (in response to Pacergal)Apple's Limited Warranty http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ for iPad excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications.
If you own an iPad that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will replace (Apple doesn't repair) your iPad with an iPad that is new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below. (The replacement will most likely be a refurbished iPad in a brown box, however, it has a new screen, back and battery.)
iPad model Out-of-Warranty Service Fee iPad mini $219 iPad 3rd, 4th generation $299 iPad 2, iPad $249
A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in US dollars and are subject to local tax.
Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPad that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service. See http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipad

"Apple do not repair iPads"
Where do you believe that the refurbished models that are supplied come from?

Apple doesn't repair iPads in that you don't send yours in and get yours back. You exchange yours for a refurb, they then send your old one into the factory to be scavenged, etc and multiple broken iPads are frankensteined into refurbished ones or are fixed there.
As a whole, yeah, they do repair them, but it's not like you drop your favorite suit off at the tailor and get the same suit back.

Isn't that a vasltly more verbose way of saying exactly what I said?
