as long as the cam offers a manual aperture-control: YOU do!

    select the smallest f-stop/biggest aperture;

now, depending on sensor-size vs. focal-length, you get more or less DoF.

a cheap glass offering, something like f4-f6, offers DoF only in a tele-mode.

good glasses f<2 offer nice blurrs in narrow ranges.

and: the bigger the sensor, the more.

'DSLR' stands here only for 'big sensor'; but meanwhile smaller chips, like APS are more common in DSLR than really expensive fx/full-size-sensors;, and offer the same size as in mirrorless-devices (Pana GH, Sony NEX), or designated camcorders .....

    Adam,

Have you looked at this list and tried all the steps that are relevant to your situation?

I went back over your posts and  from what I gathered – your original problem was losing renders. Is that correct or are you also prevented from exporting? Also noticed that you were using some third party plug-ins. Perhaps disable them and testing whether FCP behaves better.

    Hey Russ,

It seems that FCPX 10.0.8 just loses/forgets the renders, so prerendering anything before export is pointless.

The main issue now is that attempts to export chunks of our project as little as 5 minutes (whole project is 6 x 10 minute chapters) result in:

    "frame xxxxxx (error -1)"

others seem to be having the same problem.

All the media is fine - Pro Res

I've deleted all render files, duplicated projects, events ...

I am using Core Melt Lock & Load and Neat Video Denoise - from my memory in 10.0.7 i was at least able to background render Lock and load and export

I'm really lost as to what I can do at this point - except hope that Apple notices something is up and patches up the hole.

I'm not entirely sure about the MBA, but with other Macs it's often fastest not to render anything before export. (I don't render unless poor playback interfers with my editing.)  That doesn't mean there's not a problem. Early versions of FCP had a bug where nearly everyone reopened projects and found orange bars where before there had been none.FWIW,  I haven't had that happen to me since 10.0.2 (or maybe it was .3).

No question that others have been prevented from exporting and got this error. Sometimes the frame info is important and replacing a clip solves the problem. But other times, the frame info appears to be bogus. Some users report success by creating a new project and deleting renders; others have reported resetting preferences fixed it. For others, nothing seems to work. So clearly there are multiple causes since a single fix doesn't seem to exist.

Frustrating to say the least. (I hope that people are submitting feedback to Apple about this – easily done via the FCP menu.)

Given your situation, I have to wonder about possible conflicts with the plug-ins. It would be useful to do a short test with the plug-ins disabled – perhaps a duplicate of your problem project. But ideally it would be with media that you're confident is good media – that is, clips that have been used successfully before.

    Good luck.

    Russ

Exported an hour and 16 XF422 project to H.264 and a two hour HDV project to ProRes. No errors.
