Q: iMac slows to a crawl, only Time Machine restore brings it back to life

This has been going on for at least 6 months now and I'm fed up with dealing with it.

 

After upgrading to 10.8 or 10.8.1, I noticed that my computer would slow to a crawl unexpectedly; even just in the finder with no apps running. I would have mouse movement, but even to click within menus, or to open a folder would be met with no repsonse and the spinning beachball. I would walk away, and an hour later, the **** beachball is still spinning and my folder hasn't opened. A restart would result in the same behavior. I tried starting in safe mode = same behavior. I would run disk utilility and repair the disk and disk permissions = same behavior.

 

I ended up doing a restore from Time Machine to a backup that was dated before the trouble started = Things ran smoothly again. I mean really smoothly; I thought "hey, I like this 10.8!". It seemed to be hitting on all cylanders for once. But after a week or two of normal usage (web browsing, youtubing, some adobe creative suite usage), the OS came to screeching halt again.

 

I tried the same steps as before, and the only thing that helped was a Time Machine restore to a backup from a couple of days prior.

 

And so it goes, I am able to use my computer normally and happily for a week or two. But it is ineveitable that my OS will spontaneously slow to a crawl and nothing can break the spell except for a couple-of-days-old Time Machine restore- and poof, I'm back up and running. But I can assure you, this is very frustrating and time-consuming.

 

I swear I'm not downloading anything illicit to my machine; I perform regular computing activites on this computer and my usage varies little from day to day.

 

When things are running well, I will open activity monitor and leave it up so I can watch out for any memory hogs, but this pursuit seems to be fruitless as it teaches me nothing.

 

Maybe this bit of info helps: at one point, a while ago, I created a new user account during one of my Mac's spells, and it seemed to work okay when I logged in. But when I logged back into my main account, I again was faced with the dreaded beachball and could not perform any functions within the Finder. I contemplated migrating all of my files to this new user, but decided that I was determined to salvage my main user account since it was clearly a software issue.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll be checking to answer any questions about my situation.

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.

Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

    Good question but I don't think that's it. I have a 250GB HD with about 60GB remaining. What else could cause this? I'll check out the links you posted. Thanks!

    First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.

     

    There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.

     

    • Reset the System Management Controller.
    • If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
    • If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
    • Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    • Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.

     

    Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.

     

    Step 1

     

    Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

     

    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

     

    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

     

    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.

     

    Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.

     

    Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.

     

    Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.

     

    Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?

     

    Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)

     

    Step 2

     

    If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.

     

    Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View ▹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

     

    Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.

     

    When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

    Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

    Thanks so much, I will try these steps the next time I encounter the slow down again. Hopefully the log will show something helpful.

     

    I will try to do the backup restore tonight so I can get it running again, and back to a fresh starting point.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.

     

    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

     

    Step 1

     

    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

     

    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

     

    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

     

    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

     

    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

     

    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

     

    Step 2

     

    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.

     

    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.

     

    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

     

    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

     

    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

     

    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

    Okay, when I logged into the guest account (step1) it performed very smoothly; it was like I had a new computer. I opened some applications and moved some files around for 5-10 minutes and experienced zero hangups.

     

    I logged back into my admin account, unplugged everything but the mouse and keyboard, and restarted into safe mode (step 2). I experienced repeated hangups and more of the same issues.

     

    Finally I restarted again as I normally would to use the computer, and the slowdown seemed a little less prominent but was still definitely occuring, making it very difficult to accomplish anything.

     

    So how do I get my admin user account to behave as smoothly as the guest account did?

    First, back up all data.

    Hold down the option key and select

    Go ▹ Library

    from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, move the entire contents of the subfolder "Caches" (not the folder itself) to the Trash, then log out and log back in. Empty the Trash. Test.

    If the problem is not solved, open the Library folder again in the same way and move the entire contents of the subfolder "Preferences" (not the folder itself) to a new folder on the Desktop (not to the Trash.) Log out and log back in. The account will then be pretty much in a clean state. Test. If you can still reproduce the problem, then put the Preferences folder contents back, replacing any that were created in their place, log out, and log in again.

    If you can't reproduce the problem in the clean state, then start putting things back in the Preferences folder piecemeal, starting with items that seem unrelated to the issue. I can’t be more specific. After each group of items, repeat the log out/log in cycle and test. At some point, the problem may reappear, in which case you know that something in the last batch of files you restored is at fault. If it never reappears, the problem is solved.

    When I removed the Caches contents, things seem to improve slightly. So I moved on to step two. Once I moved the Preference folder contents, logged out, logged back in, I noticed a dramatic change. This excited me so much I began using my computer normally and was amazed at how well it ran. I noticed a lot of my settings were gone from various applications, and that I had to log into a lot of services as if for the first time; but all-in-all the computer had never been better.

     

    I continued this way for an hour or two. Then I went ahead and started restoring the preference files as you suggested. I started with the most recent and, at about 10 files at a time, restored all of the preference files that had been accessed up to as recently as March. With each batch I logged out and logged back in and I noticed with each logout/login, the desktop came up a little bit slower than each previous login. Now I have about 100 preference files restored to the Preferences folder, but I still have about 600 to retore from my orginal Preferences folder. I'm afraid that if I keep going, things will gradually slow down again.

     

    I haven't noticed any one batch of preference files that significantly slowed things down. Is it alright to delete the remaining 600 preference files that I apparaently didn't access frequently anyway? I realize that many of them may reappear as I use more of the software on my computer, but at least they will be fresh right? Am I incorrect in my assumption that this makes a difference?

    As long as you have backups, you can safely delete them. You'll have to recreate the settings they contain.

    So I continued using the computer for a few days after clearing out my Preferences folder, but I still encounter slow-downs. They're not as debilitating as before; they maybe last 15-30 seconds. During these slow-downs, most or all apps running (inlcuding the finder) register as "not responding" in the activity monitor. But the computer always seems to grind through it, and comes back around to being useable again.

     

    I have been leaving the Preferences folder open, sorted by date modified, to observe if any out of the ordinary preference files get accessed during the times that I experience a slow-down. But nothing seems to be linked to them; no pattern, no specific application.

     

    At this point, I am able to use the computer better than when I had the problem before, but not as well as when I do a backup restore - the random slowdowns do not occur for at least a few days after a backup restore.

     

    Does any of this lend any insight into what's going on?

    Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.

    First, empty the Trash.

    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

    The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

    Okay I copied and pasted what you gave me into the terminal and it spit out the number 321.

    Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.

    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.

     

    Step 1

    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.

    Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

     

    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.

    Step 2 (optional)

     

    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.

    Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.

    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select

    Utilities ▹ Terminal

    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.

    In the Terminal window, type this:

    res

     

    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

    resetpassword

     

    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.

    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

    Select

    ▹ Restart

    from the menu bar.
