The Mac App Store will not update software not installed by it, so probably you purchased and installed iWork from DVD or via the downloadable demo.

Thanks it was pre installed by Apple when I purchased the imac so I would have expected them to get it right?

I suspect that very few of the people responding on this forum got iWork preinstalled on a Mac since it changed to App Store distribution. I got my copy preinstalled, but it was in 2009, when they shipped a DVD with the computer.
Apparently, post App Store, you are supposed to be able to go to a Purchases page in the App Store and find a place where you "Accept" the preinstalled applications under your Apple ID. Since I am still living in the past (Snow Leopard), I can't check that, though. If you find a way to do that, it might be nice to post back here with some details, since the question does come up sometimes and no one here seems to know about it.

Which iMac and when did you purchase it?
The Mac App Store is a relatively new development and Apple has managed to stuff up iWork installation in a myriad of interesting ways, so we need some background.

Tried that Jeff but its not showing up as a purchase in the App Store.
Looks like it might be a call to Tech Support tomorrow.

27" 2.9 Ghz purchased 10 days ago direct from the Apple Store. Now have a tech call booked for Monday so I'm hoping I'll have an answer then. Looking elsewhere I think the solution might be a refund and a re-install from the App Store.

Monday!? Wow, that's slack.
Where are you? You should be able to just ring Apple telephone support and get an answer over the phone straight away.
This btw is why I don't let Apple preinstall or customise anything on my Macs. You might ask them why they didn't install the latest version of Pages seeing it has been available since last December.
