i have an ipod classic (7th generation, i believe) that i am trying to repair for a friend that has become corrupted, but when plugged in goes from corrupted to an error message. how do i fix this?

my friend was recently in a car crash, and since then, he's ipod classic (180gb, 7th generation i think) has been on the fritz. from what he has told me, when plugged in, it says it is corrpted, but then it goes to an error (which i cannot identify right now).any solutions, or do i need to come back with more info?

iPod classic, Windows 7
