BTW... after 4 fresh restarts now machine is doing fine again.
Really curious behavior.
I will try the zap pram and apple hardware test later.

D only works IF you have the OEM DVD in your drive.
And only later models had it --- on the original system hard drive -- it was also on OEM DVD --- and now with 2011 MacBook and others with Lion (and no DVD!) it is invoked and pulled in and requires an internet connection.
Making changes to hardware, good to Reset SMC and PRAM. SMC better.
See my tips on what upgrades for a 1,1 like mine.
Also, be sure to run SmcFanControl 2.4+ so you can set the minimum fan speed up 300 rpm to more like 900 rpm instead. Check the temps for sure with Temperature Monitor. Check for dust. Replace the graphic card if you have X1900 or 7300GT or others and consider it time for ATI 5770.
And check for dust and all the fans operate properly. A bad dust clogged graphic card can cause the fans to go into high gear. Why the BR did it I don't know. I assume the way you threaded the SATA cable in there didn't disturb or move anything when you put it in.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will try them. I have tried zap pram and didn´t help at all.
2 Years ago I substituted the original video card for the same model.
This strange behavior only started after connecting the new blu ray drive. I searched at the web and users mentioned having succces with this LG WNS40 .
Sorry for my simple questions but what is OEM drive? video card ddrives?
I will examine dust inside, RAM and the SMC soon.
I use 2 PCI-e cards from Avid Pro Tools HD. Is it possible that after connecting the bluray drive to this motherboard Sata connection my mac pro shall be draining more power than what could be considered safe and fan accelarates?

You may need better air flow now that there are two cards and more heat.
Your mac has more than enough PSU
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
just WHAT graphic card makes it harder to help for one thing.
Original Equipment. The DVD that your Mac came with, that has 10.4.x and has "Apple Hardware Test" on the label.

Oh, now I saw what is an OEM drive.
a) I Have been using these PT HD2 System ( 2 pci-e cards) since July, 2007. Only after the install of this bluray drive the behavior of the fan popped up. I remember that Digidesign resent me on 2008 a slightly altred set of card because on that time some mac proes would not start properlly with them o the pci-e slots.
b) The video card that I substituted is the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 gt, around 2011.
c) I will examine with Apple hardware test from the 10.4.x original disc.

you need ATI 5770.
If you plan to go to Lion 10.7.5, do a clean install, leave 10.6.8 "as is"
Make sure your hardware and software are compatible.
I know there are threads about BlueRay but never used one, maybe you installed some software and drivers and they are a problem??
BEFORE making changes to a system in any way, CLONE it so you have a fall back to your prior working system.http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7032/carbon-copy-cloner
Create an OS X Lion Install disc
How to clone your system:Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), ATI 5770 16GB Samsung SSD Sonnet 6G

I searched a lot on the web concerning the specific blu ray drive and it provided me this LG 14WHNS40. I just plugged it with a Sata Cable. No software was installed at all.
I am planning to update my system on the second semester to PT HD 10.3 and the Digidesign Avid site recommends 10.6.7 ( I already have 10.6.8) to 10.7.4 (Lion).
p.s: after I did the Reset P-Ram procedure today, the monitors started inverted. Monitor 1 is a 37 LCD and monitor 2 is a 27 LEd screen. After the total reboot, things reverted back to normal.
What amazes me is that now I am working perfectly with no hassles at all. It is just the restart that makes the machine go crazy.
I experimented booting the machine with the audio interfaces from digidesign powered off. It did fine. I will check more on this.
Have a nice weekend! Thanks a lot!
