I need to prepare a multiple choice exam, but Pages is doing something funky:

1. Viruses are

     a. Obligate intracellular parasites

     b. Living organisms

     c. pathogenic

     d. found everywhere

2. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck?

     b. 1

     c. 2

     d. 5

     e. 10

3. The wheels on the bus go

     c. up and down

     d. round and round

     e. sideways

     f. backwards

I manually put the numbers for the questions, but when I hit tab for the choices it increments the first letter after each question. How do I get Pages to autoformat a, b, c and d for each question?

I think you are typing a return above the question, introducing another line.

    Try:

Inspector > Text > Text > spacing > Before paragraph: 12pt or whatever you are using

    Hi Tony,

Another way is to get rid of automatic lists and manually type your question-and-multiple-choice sheet.

In Pages > Preferences > Auto Correction, deselect Automatically detect lists. Then format as you wish.

Here is a screenshot. To illustrate,

View > Show Rulers is turned on; and

View > Show Invisibles is turned on.

Blue right-pointing triangle is a tab stop. Insert by clicking in the ruler.

Here is a workaround, not elegant:

Set up styles: Question, A, B, C, D and E, and for each set the next paragraph style to be the next one.  Type in your stuff, ignoring the format for the moment.  When you finish, go through and select each bunch of answers and indent them, having already set up a List Style with numbers for the first level and letters for the second. It works for me.

Caveat:  I set up each style so that the lines stay together and keep with next paragraph, except for answer E.  This is to keep the answers on the same page as the question.  If you change the page margins, however, Pages will often renumber things incorrectly.  I have had no success in getting around this.

    Cheers!
