Q: No Wake-on-LAN possible since updating to ML

Hi everybody,

since updating from OS X 10.7 to 10.8 (clean install), Wake-on-LAN does not work anymore. Setup: Mac mini (Early 2011) connected to Time Capsule (2nd gen) via devolo dLAN. Mac mini goes to sleep after 30 minutes and eventually disappears from the network. Sending Wake-On-LAN packets or using Back To My Mac fail, it simply won't wake up.

Wake-on-LAN worked smoothly under 10.7 after some problems. Any ideas?

Thanks and regards

Steffen

This has been working EVERY TIME:

Connect your iPad/iPhone to your iMac via Bluetooth when iMac is awake.

Now when iMac is sleeping and

When iTunes shared library doesn't show up, turn on Bluetooth on your iPad/iPhone and click on your iMac connection.

Now I have found whether or not the device connects to the Mac, the connection to the shared library can now be made through the other apps.

Try it, it has worked EVEY TIME.

Correct, fix this crap apple. This is BS. My IMAC was fine before 10.8.3 and now it will not wake via remote VNC on the same network. I'm ripped about this and ready to smash this IMAC. My pc's on my network don't have any issues. HA? HOW ABOUT IT?

Only just seen this thread but my 2011 Mac Mini connected to a Devolo wired power network solution which in turn connects to our Sky (Sagem) router can ALWAYS be woken up by the likes of Mobile Mouse, Apple's own Remote app etc. But only when on wifi which means i'm in the same building. I might as well just press the trackpad and wake it up.

I want to be able to use logmein to do stuff on my Mac when I'm away from the house but not prepared to set sleep to off.

Seems Apple doesn't consider this a top priority. It just "doesn't" work these days. With Tim Cook at the helm are the wheels starting to loosen as Android and Samsung in particular steal a march on smartphones?

Come on Apple. Get WOL sorted.

Using a brand new Mac Mini (non-server, running ML) + brand new Airport Extreme purchased in 2Q 2013. Submitted a bug report today as well. Fingers very loosely crossed.

In response to my post two up, on Friday I received the following email.

    Hello Findlay,

My name is John Robinson and I am a Senior Applecare Advisor in the United States. I was asked to contact you by Apple Engineering regarding a wake on lan issue you posted in our discussion forums. Engineering would like to run some diagnostics and analyze logs.

Please let me know a good time and number to contact you.

    Sincerely,

    John Robinson

    AppleCare Senior Advisor

    P. S. If you wish to reach me regarding this case, please contact me at xxx ext Xxx. I currently work Tuesday -Saturday, 7:00am to 4:00pm CST. If you reach my voicemail, please leave your name, phone number, case number and the best time to reach you. If you prefer--or if you need assistance with a different issue--please contact Apple at 800 275 2273 or http://www.apple.com/support.

A few email exchanges later and what the Engineers would like is a system profile, crash, hang, panic and spin logs as well as the logs from a sleep logging app which I will send to you.

Tthis should take at least half an hour if we can reproduce this issue on command.

John and I weren't able to arrange a chat on Friday but I'm hopeful the "reach out" session will happen this coming week. I will post up any useful feedback.

For two weeks, it seemed that my problem was solved. I deactivated and reactivated the WOL settings in Network preferences. This weekend, I had to do something I do not know after a few reboots when I run Disk Utilities. My MacBook Air does not wake on lan this morning ... I quit QuikIO and TeamViewer and relaunched these two apps, but on arriving at the office, my Mac is still out of reach and WOL does not work again ...

I think I found why WOL worked for a few weeks: Bittorrent was running! Since the weekend, I quit Bittorrent and WOL stopped working. This proves that the problem is still on the side of OSx since Bittorrent maintains a persistent network connection ...

I know a few posts earlier I mentioned that it could be due to DHCP, etc. and that I seemed to have fixed it with leasing a fresh IP address. Well, that didn't help for too long. After a few days, it's back to not WOL. This was an issue with only one MacBookPro (A) at the time. The other MacBookPro (B) was waking up without any issues. But a couple of weeks later, the 2nd MBP started having WOL issues.

Note that both MBPs have Plex Media Server and Plex Client. Before both had the WOL issue, keeping the Plex Client open on MBP 'B' used to wake up MBP 'A' and if a Plex content from the MBP 'A' isn't played, it will go back to sleep in a few seconds. The cycle continued every 15-30 seconds or so on MBP 'A', as long as MBP 'B''s Plex Client was open. Same thing used to happen the other way round too, after Plex Media Server was installed on MBP 'B'. I wonder if this regular wake/sleep cycle killed WOL progressively on both MBPs.

There's a MacBook Air in the house and that doesn't have WOL issues, but it has never done regular sleep/wake cycles. It wakes up to show file shares and screen sharing. The 2 MBPs don't although they used to. All 3 have ML installed. Interestingly, the first MBP (A) wakes up on request from iTunes Remote (iTunes Home Sharing) on the iPhone but for File Share, Screen Share & Plex Media Server, it doesn't wake up. Haven't tried any other utility to wake it up. I haven't tried the iTunes WOL on MBP 'B' either but I think it may work. All 3 show each other's Network availability in Finder under 'shared' (so Bonjour/iCloud is advertising them on the network) but just won't connect to the MBPs.
