Q: GarageBand cannot be opened because of a problem

As of recently I haven't been able to get Garageband to open and get the error message in the subject. I've searched for a few days now and it looks like I might have the Flashback virus. However, once I ran the flashback remover it came up empty. Running the manual searches suggested on various sites also came up negative. I've reinstalled Garageband and I'm still getting the error. Can anyone help me?

    What makes you suspect a flashback infection?

    Have you checked like described here: http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00002336.html  ?

     

    Has the DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES variable been set in your system?

     

    I've reinstalled Garageband and I'm still getting the error. Can anyone help me?

     

    One of the dynamic libraries in your system libraries cannot be loaded, see the error message:

    Dyld Error Message:

      Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib

      Referenced from: /usr/lib/libxar.1.dylib

      Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:

    /usr/lib is a system installation directory for unix extensions; reinstalling GarageBand will not fix this.

     

    Did you install any unix tools lately? For example Gimp, Image Magick, Ruby, any Darwin Ports? That may have installed an outdated or incompatible dynamic library.

    I didn't get any results from the instructions verbatim, but when I replaced the browser portion with GarageBand.app (i.e. defaults read /Applications/GarageBand.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment) it came up with results. However, following the subsequent steps gave me a message along the lines of "directory does not exist". That's why I'm not sure if I have it or not. I was mostly just trying to be thorough in my explenation.

     

    The only instillation I recently did was of windows. I dualbooted my mac with 32x windows the other day.

    What did you see there?

    On my systems this variable is bound to a private framework in the System Library: "GraphicsAppSupport.framework"

     

    defaults read /Applications/GarageBand.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

    {

        "DYLD_FRAMEWORK_PATH" = "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/GraphicsAppSupport.framework/Frameworks";

    }

     

    If you see the same, that should be o.k.

     

    Do you have a backup from the time, before that problem occured, so that you could try to restore the dynamic library

         /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib

    I just ran it again and got exactly that result.

     

    I have backups of folders with files I know I will actively need but unfortunately no backup of my entire system.

     

    I know that's careless of me, I feel pretty stupid right about now...

    Check, if the problem is really due to the corrupted system file or caused by wrong settings in your account.  This can easily be done by launching GarageBand from a different user Account, for example the Guest account. Or create a new admin-account from the System Preferences. Logged into the other account, try to launch GarageBand. Does it work?

    Isolating an issue by using another user account

     

    • If GarageBand also crashes, when working from a different account, then you need to reinstall the system to replace the missing library file .
    • Try first, if installing on top of your current system will help (from your Snowleopard installation media), but if that does not fix it, you may need to backup and make a clean install, see:

    • If GarageBand works from a different account without crashes, post back.

    It crashed on the guest account too. I guess I'm gonna have to reinstall. Thanks a ton for all your help, I really appreciate it.

    You are welcome. Glad to help.

     

    If you have an empty hard disk, you could try to clean install Snowleopard on that drive, also GarageBand and test the system there. This way you probably can retrieve the missing library /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib from that clean install and copy it to your current system.

    The Flashback Trojan has been extinct for several months now, so unless you contracted it a year ago at about this time, you have not been infected. In any case, it had no impact on GarageBand, so hopefully the re-installation has solved things for you.
