There appears to be an issue with AVG anti-virus at present. If you have AVG I recommend that you remove it and install an alternate anti-virus such as Microsoft Security Essentials before attempting to restore the library or your efforts are likely to be wasted.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash

Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.

If you have a backup of your iTunes library then simply restore the iTunes Library.itl file from that backup into your library folder. Otherwise in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.

    RestorePrevious.png

Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied and renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade. Note that the .tmp files may represent other iTunes files than the .itl, or may be incomplete, so you may need to try a few in order to find one that works, or you may not find one at all.

If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created, or just add the media folder to the library. iTFW may be able to preserve ratings & playcounts if files have been renamed and therefore moved since the backup was taken.

When you get it all working make a backup!

Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

If you have AVG then note they have released a second patch designed to prevent this issue, so update AVG before attempting to recover your database. If you don't have AVG I'd be interested to know which AV product you use.

This is great if you are using AVG anti-virus which many of us are not.

Although it seems that AVG in particular of late has been a trigger for this problem, it is not the only possible cause. The recovery steps work regardless. The recommendation to backup also applies.

Okay I DID try this but nothing is there that was missing.  If it is not on the computer, it should be in the cloud account which itunes says it should be by auto setting and you can tell by the cloud icon next to the song but if the song is not showing up there then there is no cloud icon which is what would be restored by overwriting with the back-up file.  My problem is not apparaently the library file corrupted but the material actually is missing as is the purchases folder/menu in itunes even in the restored version.
