Why are my iCal menus disabled?

I am having troubles with iCal.  Most of my menus are disabled:

iCal > File > New Event

iCal > Edit > cut, copy, paste, delete, select all, duplicate,

iCal > View > by day, week, month year, Go to date

... to name a few.

I find the iCal > Edit > copy, paste a tragic loss.  Many reoccuring events cannot be created within the "repeat" option because they follow no pattern (such as 2xweek, every Monday, etc).

I am slowly feeling the iMac and its applications being pushed to the end of the line. Excuse me, Apple, but my iMac doesn't have a touch screen (yet) and I would like to have some tried and true features (aka commands) survive.  Don't get me started on scroll up/down arrows lost with the Mountain Lion "upgrade."  I would have stayed happy with Snow Leopard except I had to "upgrade" for iCloud to work with my iPhone.

Oh, iRaspberry to you, Cupertino!!!

Can anyone clue me in:  Are the iCal menu features described above gone forever or do I need to tweak a setting?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5.1, iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, iCloud
