Can anyone tell me what to do when safari is not responding: this is happening to me  quite often lately.

What is the exact error message you get?  Are you connecting to the internet wirelessly, or direct wired?

When a program becomes unresponsive, you can force quit the application by either choosing force quit from the Apple menu or pressing the Command, Option and Escape keys together and choosing the program you want to quit from the list.

Try resetting Safari to clear the cache and see if that helps.

Run software update to make sure you are running the lastest version of Safari compatible with 10.5.8

Is it happening with one website in particular or all websites?

If the profile signature in your question is up to date, your computer is certainly not.  A lot has happened in recent years on the internet when it comes to websites and browsers...HTML 5, new variations of Flash player, etc...so it is important to stay current with your operating system and software to keep up with changes going on around you.
