What is the exact error message you get? Are you connecting to the internet wirelessly, or direct wired?

When a program becomes unresponsive, you can force quit the application by either choosing force quit from the Apple menu or pressing the Command, Option and Escape keys together and choosing the program you want to quit from the list.
Try resetting Safari to clear the cache and see if that helps.
Run software update to make sure you are running the lastest version of Safari compatible with 10.5.8
Is it happening with one website in particular or all websites?
