If you mean that you gave the calendar itself the name "On My Mac", you better change that name to anthing else, e.g. "Jan's Calendar". The name "On my Mac" is used for the Folder in which your Mac's calendars are.
But aside from that, an event that you enter in a calendar in the On My Mac folder should stay there.
These entries are not lost but in another calendar: for example: you have only one calendar, and it is called "on my mac" the entry will go automatically into another calendar, probably iCloud Calendar, if you have iCloud on.
While entering an event, rightclick on it and you will see "calendar" halfway and you will see in what calendar the entry is.
Put that name in the left Navigation Panel, click it on and the other calendar off, and you will see only that calendar.

Thanks for quci response. Sorry but this does not help. I have one calendar under the "on my mac" folder which works fine. I set up another one but entries disappear after a few minutes. While they are there, it shows that they are setup for the correct calendar but do not stay.

do you sync with iCloud?
are you sure they are entered in this calendar (rightclick and check, so long as they are there).
what is the name of this second calendar?

I have iCloud setup but do not want this calendar on it. All other iCloud calendars sync fine. The two calendars I have on my mac are Mine and Bookings. The Bookings is the new one but events only last about 5 minutes when I leave it alone. If I turn it off and back on (with the check), they disappear immediately. No problem with the Mine calendar.
