Is it OK to use sleep mode on the new iMac instead of shutting it down?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    Yes, that's why it's part of the OS, I'd strongly recommend putting the display to sleep though instead of the whole computer.

    Apple states in the owners manual;

    If you will be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When your iMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass the startup process.

    No good reason not to let the Mac sleep completely, unless you enjoy running up your electricity bill and wasting resources. Also, shutting down overnight periodically can remove or avoid system glitches. Apple recommends sleeping instead of shutting down as a convenience, more than anything else. There is no harm in shutting down if that's what you prefer.
