Q: the volume fades after about 45 minutes of playing.  It is not the headphones because it has happened with different headphones.  This occurs on both Ipod 7th generation and iphone 5

The volume has been fading and then switching off after about 45 minutes of playing my iphone 5 and ipod nano 7th generation.  Anyone know why?

If it happens on two different devices, it is unlikely to be a hardware problem on the devices.  If you used more than on set of headphones, it is unlikely to the the headphones.  So what else can it be that both devices have in common, for this situation...?

What do mean by "volume fades"?  Is the volume setting being turned down, so you can manually turn it back up again?  Or is the level of sound going lower with no change to the volume setting, so you cannot turn it back up?
