Q: Unread message count is wrong in Mail and Dock

Just last week I noticed that both my Email Inbox & Mail Dock Icon is showing an incorrect unread message count on both my MacBook & iMac. I am using a Microsoft Exchange Hosted account (Office 365) and it is the only email account tied to both of my Macs. My iPhone shows the correct unread message count as well as Outlook Web Access, and on a seperate windows-based computer, Outlook is showing the correct unread message count of 3. Both Mac systems are using OS X 10.7.3 and I have never experienced this issue before.

The MacBook is showing 39 unread messages, and the iMac is showing 16, in actuality there are 3 unread messages. If I create a smart mailbox that shows only unread messages - it shows up with the correct number (3), when I sort by "Unread Messages" for Inbox, it only shows that I have three unread messages.

I have rebuilt the inbox, I have deleted the email account from the computer, restarted the computer and then readded it, all it did was bring the unread message count from 19 to 16 on my iMac (still - it should be 3).

I have also gone to Mail -> Preferences -> General and verified that Show Dock Unread County is set to "Inbox" but oddly enough, when I click "All Mailboxes" the unread count on the Dock changes to 3.

Is there a file I can delete to reset that unread message count? I feel like I've done everything that's suggested to no avail.

Thanks!

How would you fix that on the iPad? It is fine at my workstation. Thanks!

Do you have to do this on your desktop machine and not your iPad?

Doing that on the desktop will not affect the iPad. The iPad count will not update the read messages until you open the app and let it update. If it is still wrong after that, then the only option would be try turning it off and back on and see if it corrects itself.

After that, you could try resetting the iPad back to it's original state and restore your content from a backup. I've never done that, so you would have to look up the instructions.

This keeps happening over and over again..is there a permanent solution for this?

What is the reason for this problem?

    I did all of this...three times...NO HELP...!

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated

I also talked to an Apple senior support specialist and we also tried the same things as mentioned here

I am hoping that there may be some kind of sotware that may help with this

This was driving me nuts too. I resolved it simply by control clicking the mailbox (POP) folder and chose "Mark all Messages as Read" from the menu list. I have three POP accounts so I had to do each one individually. Did the trick.

I did that the other day and I do apoligize for not getting back to this forum....it did work

I have 10 POP accounts and almost 40 folders that emails get sorted to with rules.

So I had about 100 actual unread but the Mail Icon showed like 550...
So I went through each one and with the kestroke commands marked them all unread then went back in and marked them read

    It worked,

I do not know why this bugged me but I let it get to me....

at any rate I agree with your advice

Unfortunately this approach does not work for IMAP or MS-Exchange accounts, which ar widely used.  For these one needs to use the earlier recommendation to cause the Mail program to recreate its database.  Once done, this solved my problem.

    Hi all,

I had the same problem. Followed the great advice on this board, but it still didn't work. I finally found the culprit. When the index files were rebuilt, the correct message count did not appear in my folders in Mail. After clicking on each folder (while investigating), a number appeared after I clicked it- 3 unread, 7 unread, etc. I took care of those, but still my dock icon was wrong. What could the problem be?

And then I found it- THE TRASH. The trash had over 60 unread messages and didn't show the count until I clicked on it. Hope this helps other users.

This worked for me and it's very simple to follow--

First you must quit and exit out of the Mail then click on your desktop and go to the Finder,

Press shift-command-g and a popup will appear. Copy & paste or enter this into the popup window  ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData   then enter

Now look for the folder called   Envelope Index

    Delete/trash that file

    Now restart your Mail

This should take care of the problem--it did for me....

    One!

    Thank you thank you.
