Q: can't change font in Mail

I am unable to change the default fonts and colors in Mail 6.2.  I go to Preferences>Fonts & Color> and click the "Select" button.  I choose the font I want but then nothing happens.  Am I missing the final step to make this change happen?

Running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on a 27" iMac.

Thanks!

    HI,

Are you typing after that to see any text in the new Font ?

Or are you highlighting existing text to change the Font but it is not Changing ?

I'm trying to change the default font for all new messages.  If I've already created a message and started typing and then highlight the text, then I can change the font.  But I want to change the default font so all new messages are created with the font and font color I want.

    Hi,

Unfortunately at this point I run out of any further knowledge on the Mail App.

I know more about iChat and the Messages apps.

Hopefully one of the regular posters on the Mail App will also chip in with some comments.

    Hey,

Did you ever resolve this problem.  I just noticed it today.  It's terribly annoying.

Message was edited by: shawnperson Restarted Mail now works.  Although it's strange that it wasn't working. I tried changing the font in several other apps and they all worked.

No. No one ever provided a solution to this issue.

I have a work around you might try.

Add a signature to your email account with whatever font you want. Two steps...like this.

    1. Create a new email message:

    signature Example.jpg

    2. Add a new signature (Mail -> Preferences -> Signatures) and Paste Clip Board into the new Signature editor:

    signature Example2.jpg

    That's All Folks!

Now, when you create new messages, you should find that the format you are looking for is already setup. All you have to do is tweak the Name,

    signature Example3.jpg

    Hope this helps!

    FenixRizing04,

I just ran into the same issue today on my 2011 MacBook Air running Mail on OS X 10.10.1. The signature workaround is clever, but I stumbled across a more straightforward approach. First, quite Mail. Then go to ~/Library/Preferences and look for a file named com.apple.mail-shared.plist. (It might not have "-shared" as part of its name, though.) Delete this file. (This won't break anything; it's just a preference file that Mail creates, and it will generate a new one the next time you launch the app.) Launch Mail, and then you should be able to change the default fonts to your liking. It worked for me.

    I hope that helped!

    All,

I tried mattai's solution and it worked immediately and like a charm.

I give extra credit to rommcm for cleverness but mattai's "delete the preferences" solution worked for me. Many thanks, it was driving me nuts!

Where do I go to type in ~/Library/Preferences?  I tried typing it in Finder but didn't get anything.
