Why is my wireless keyboard intermittently losing function?

Perhaps 2-3 times per week, my Apple wireless keyboard (c. 2009) stops working with my MacBook Air (13", Mid 2012, OSX 10.8.3), which is up on a stand. This occurs after minutes or hours of successful use. I can't identify any activities that correlate with the problem. It can occur at any battery level for the keyboard.

I think it's a Bluetooth issue, because when I click on the BT icon in the menubar after keyboard function stops, it takes 5-10 seconds for the BT drop down menu to appear. When the menu finally appears, the keyboard is still bolded (implying that it's connected). In the keyboard submenu, the Disconnect option appears. But if I try to disconnect, the menu does not change, i.e. I don't get the option to reconnect.

I've turned the keyboard off and on, with no effect. The only way that I've found to restore function for the wireless keyboard is to restart the MBA.

Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
