There is a setting in iTunes preferences that may be relevant to the first issue (not syncing automatically). In iTunes preferences Devices tab, there is a checkbox for Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically. If that is checked, the iPod connects without the initial sync.
The podcast download issue is probably unrelated to the iPod syncing issue. Every day means once per day. So if the check for the day already took place, it won't happen again until the next day. If you want it to check more often, you can change that setting to Every hour.

Dear Kenichi Watanbe
Many thanks for your reply.
I meant to say that i already have Prevent ipods sunching automatically unchecked ?
also on the podcasts , even once i have downloaded new podcasts onto Itunes i still have to manually add to my ipod ?
Very strange which makes me convinced i am doing something wrong ?

Are you sure you have the Music and Podcasts tabs for the iPod set to sync in iTunes? When you "manually" add podcasts to the iPod, does that mean you are doing a drag and drop on the iPod in iTunes? Even if you do not have Manually manage music checked on the iPod's Summary tab, nothing will sync automatically, if you do not have the Music and Podcast tabs set up to sync.
