I recommend you to ask about what is causing the error, they have to gave you a diagnostic...

In my case running the VST didn't help, no error was triggered, but it was obvious that someting very wrong was happening, just as described in TS4088. So the Authorized service stay a few days with the macbook in order to reproduce the errror themselfs. They could reproduce the error a few times in one day and that was enoght to tell Apple and replace the logic board with this plan, because simpthoms were exactly the same as described.

Since they replced the logic board no more kernel panics ever! my macbook is working perfectly... so it's a prove the the VST not always detect the problem.

Hope you could solve this, keep trying!

For those who are interested, here is what the error message looks like when VST fails.

Yes, it really is that obvious. If it passes then it shows a big green bar that says "Pass".

    oFilipeSousa-

You have the same panic report and the same Mac Book Pro 6,2 that correlates with the Hardware probelm described in the article. Print out a copy of that article and take it with you to your Apple dealer. Ask them to run the SPECIAL diagnostic for this problem.

Qcuick question for those who took their laptops similar to my manufacturing/design defect infested MacBook Pro 15 to get the logic board changed by Apple....

Did you have get any pushback if you had upgraded your hard drive or RAM over the standard config?

    Thank you

    Imran

Imran, I didn't get any pushback.  The genius and whole depot repair experience was exactly how I wanted. I am very happy with Apple's service.    I received my laptop back from flat fee ($310) deopt repair less than a week ago.

In the store they let me take out my drive (to protect my data) and I replaced it with the original drive, which I had previously securely erased and had coppied Snow Leopard from another computer, that wouldn't boot the machine.  I gave them my laptop with 8GB Corsair RAM which I suspected, but I had thrown away the original RAM.

When I was called and informed my computer was ready, the genius told me Depot Repair say my 8GB RAM had a problem and they installed 4GB ram.  My 8GB RAM was returned seperately in an envelope, and I will toss it.  They replaced the logic board and more.  I am very pleased because the GPU failure I had was a nightmare!  My laptop came back looking like new.  I had figured they would have to replace the hard drive, because it wouldn't boot, but the machine came back and booted with my account on it.

After getting my laptop back, I upgraded it as I previously planned.  I purchased and installed 16GB RAM and replaced the HDD with a new 500GB SSD!    Whoohooo!  Initially it took too long for the startup.  However, after setting the SSD to be the startup disk, startup is now blazing fast.  I don't have a HDD in my laptop.  I am going for low power speed.

My computer was returned to me in 5 days.

My macbook pro (Mid-2010; Mountain Lion) has been crashing to Kernal Panics more and more frequently; from few times a week to now around twice a day. It's getting really fustrating and not sure what is causing it. I think its might be Chrome, as it seems to eat alot of my harddisk space with getting constant 'Your startup disk is full' popups.

I've switched over to Safari for now and hopefully it wont crash.

I do hope its a software issue and not hardware; as I do not have Apple extra warranty.

I'm not sure how to paste up my Kernel Panic log; this is from Logs>DiagnosticReports:

    bishibashi-

You have the same panic report and the same Mac Book Pro 6,2 that correlates with the Hardware problem described in the article. Print out a copy of that article and take it with you to your Apple dealer. Ask them to run the SPECIAL diagnostic for this problem.

TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

If it fails the spevial diagnostic, they will take your MacBook for a Hardware repair, at no cost to you.

If it passes, they will ask you to remove these extensions ot the Mac OS X kernel to debug further:

    Hi Grant,

Thanks a lot for your advices. I brought my MBP to an Apple Authorized Service Center and they replaced the motherboard in 5 days for free. I was just in time because the replacement program is only valid for 3 years. So if anybody else is having the same problem, hurry up!!!

Note that the first replacement motherboard they tried was defective: did not pass the tests... I was lucky that the technician did a good job.

  • wkathym Calculating status...

Thank you! I need to do this soon for my mid-2010 MacBook Pro. Hope this is still valid for me. Getting exact same kernal panics ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Happens when scrolling in iPhoto.

  • Grant Bennet-Alder Level 8 Level 8 (48,145 points)

The Genius Bar runs this special diagnostic without using your System to run it.

So you should hurry in there -- you do not need to clean out the third-party kexts FIRST.

The local repaire center returned my MBP (retina) without being able to find anything but now it seems that I found the cause for the crash and I am finally able to reproduce it.

It only seems to happen when using the descrite graphics card and using the computer on my lap - more specifically on just one leg. Sounds crazy  but it seems like the MacBook Pro case slightly deforms if not on a flat surface or at least both legs and that might cause a short circuit.

Maybe someone else could give it a try. My machine had been repaired before, so maybe the repair place did something wrong as the problem didn't happen before.

  • Harald Walker Level 1 Level 1 (30 points)

I was able to reproduce it several time by pushing the case on the back in a certain spot.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz-LGmdy0Tw

I would say this is clearly a hardware issue aften spending hours of looking at possible software causes.

  • Grant Bennet-Alder Level 8 Level 8 (48,145 points)

That does seem like a Hardware problem. Software does not tend to crash when you push on it. Your motherboard may be loose or some other wacky problem.

But if you can reproduce it, they can fix it.
