iTunes will automatically create a backup of your iPhone settings, contacts, messages, etc (the one you refer to).
Simply connect your iPhone to your computer, run iTunes, and restore the iPhone from backup. Whem prompted from what backup to restore, choose the latest backup entry available. More about restoring from iTunes backup here:

Thanks for your reply, however when I selected restore, it never gave me the option to back up to a previous backup entry. It was going to back up to factory original settings. I'm still stumped!

iPhone backups are located as follows:
Mac --> Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
PC --> C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Don’t worry too much, you can restore lost contacts back to iPhone with iTunes.
Right-click on the iPhone icon in the “Devices” column and select “Restore from Backup” from iTunes. Select one of the backup versions from the drop-down menu. Click the “Restore” button. This will restore any contacts that you may have deleted since the last time that you synced your iPhone with iTunes.
Eject your iPhone. Go to your contact list. Your lost iPhone contacts should be restored.
Glad it works for you.

Manually backup the file from iTunes,
but make sure your restoring to the exact firmware to avoid risks!
The directory the has your contacts is "/private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook"...
You can find the right backup file and extract it, and restore the original iPhone contacts.
Hope I helped.

Simple. This is how you do it:
Download FREE: http://software.bigbigsoft.com/ipod-ipad-iphone-recovery
It recovers your deleted iPhone contacts even WITHOUT a backup!

This is my breakdown of your situation:
- 1stly, try finding your original backup. If you do find it, you're safe. You can restore back to your previous backup, freely and easily, check this out: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
- 2ndly, remember, if you don't have a backup, you cannot restore back to your iPhone.
- 3rdly, you can, however, view lost iphone contacts on your Pc or Laptop or Mac or whatever. You can then manually type them into your phone again, if that's what you want.
Anything unclear? Give us a shout.

I had not backup my iphone 4s for almost 8 months (Not advisable - I know) until 30mins ago. I just suffered the exact loss of contacts as 'dfrain' after plugging my iphone to my PC. All the recent contacts are gone. All I can see are phone numbers . . . I have no clue particularly since most solutions I have read here talk about utilising the backup.
