Q: Stabilization option disappears for some clips

Hi. Need a little help. When I highlight some clips in my timelin, the options for Stabilization and Rolling Shutter  simply do not appear in the video Inspector -- but those options are there when I highlight other clips.

Could you help me get the Stabilization option back for these clips?

In more detail, what happens is this:

  • In my timeline, I highlight one clip and all the standard video options appear in the Inspector: Color, Transform, Crop, Distort, Stabilization, Rolling Shutter, Spacial Conform, Compositing
  • I highlight another clip, and Stabilization and Rolling Shutter are the only options missing entirely in the Inspector
  • I've tried clicking on the down arow in the top left corner of the affected clips, and selected Analyze and Stabilize, but that does nothing and does not make the Stabilization and Rolling Shutter options appear in the Inspector
  • I've also tried launching a whole new project, dragging some of that footage back into the timeline, and the same thing happens: no Stabilization option in the Inspector

Been editing for months in FCPX and this is the first time this problem has come up. Did I accidentallyy click a button I shouldn't have? Any help to resolve this would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I've been seeing this problem, and I guessed it might be something to do with optimisation - but on the XDCAM EX clips I see the problem on (intermittently) there isn't the option to optimise.

I tried exporting the clip as ProRes 422 and then dropping it onto the timeline (replacing the XDCAM clip) and it worked a treat.

By using the Range Selection tool, I was able to export only the section of the clip that I wanted as PR422.

Not ideal, but it works for me.

I right click the clip (thats missing stabilization/rolling shutter) in the timeline and select open in Timeline for that clip, options show up for that clip in inspector, but only in their timeline view. I wasn't able to get it to show up on my main timeline inspector, but the settings were applied. Luckily for me it was two clips out of 150 clips in my timeline

hope this helps at least a little.

I have this problem and it can't be anything to do with updating mid project.

I applied stabilization to a particular clip the other day.

I now select this same clip in the timeline, and the stabilization option is gone - so I can't turn it off.

    Wow!

Works a treat for me - thanks OriginalKevie!

    (Have you tried this, furrytoes?).

Same problem here. Video is from a GoPro. Stabilization and Rolling Shutter vanished from the Effects panel for some Timeline clips. Audio had been detached and deleted from all clips.

Workaround was to move the Playhead to the beginning of a Timeline clip, Shift-F to "Reveal in Event Browser", and Overwrite ('D' key is the shortcut). Detaching the audio seems to recreate the problem but lowering a clip's audio avoided it here.

I have the same problem. Opening in the timeline works for some of the clips but not all. I have this problem with no consistent patterns with three different canon cameras. I'll report this to Apple.

Yes, "Open in TImeline" showed the stabilization options again, for me. I'm glad somebody's clicking around everywhere, figuring out these workarounds ;-)

Thanks, your simple technique solved my problem. it's helpful for those who are in the middle of the project and can't re-import. it even saves a lot of time and hassle of deleting & reimporting everything again.

YES!! right clicking the file - in the timeline - and selecting " open in timeline " - once its opened up in the timeline..... the stab and rolling shut options are back in the inspector.  Bam!  Thank you sooooo much.  Just saved my ***.  My client thanks you.

Definitely a bug. coachinberkeley has the answer I found, but I wish Apple would fix this and the other bugs in what is otherwise a great program.

    10.0.8

Lost access to select stabilization in the Inspector:

whenever the disabled or undisabled key (V) attached to the clip from the bottom a separate audio track.

    100% bug.

I hate FCPX - If i didnt have to upgrade it for work I would have stayed with 7. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Safe yourself frustration and time - get Lock & Load from Coremelt and learn how to tweak the settings.

You will never have that problem again.
