Why did the iPhoto upgrade remove my iphoto library icon which had all of my pictures and dumped it into the trash? If I had emptied my trash I would have lost all of my pictures

I uploaded pictures from my camera to iphoto and then, by mistake, deleted the photos from my camera storage card. I edit pictures in iphoto and then two days later I installed the system and iphoto upgrade. When I went back to iphoto all of my pictures were gone, and the new iphoto library icon was without content. Therefore, I purchased a media storage recovery program which worked. But to my surprise, when I open my trash to empty content today, I noticed there was an iphoto icon. So I restored this to my desktop and immediately iphoto imported the pictures which were all of my previous uploads. I do not understand why iphoto application upgrades removes existing libraries and deposits them in the trash. Does any one have an explaination?
