Often deleting the account in Mail>Preferences>Accounts and then re-creating it resolves the problem. Here's a thread I contributed to last week discussing a similar problem:
Sorry, but no change in status.
Several times I've removed/added the account, using both the original @me.com and @iCloud.com domains. I've opened Connection Doctor and gotten the bad news. I've checked iCloud status and everything is working.
Except email. :(
