Did you install any third party finder extensions. There is one going around that is suppose to add color back to the icons that causes this.
Boot in safe mode and log in (hold the shift key down while booting) if the icons are back then the extension you installed is causing this. Uninstall the extension.

Thanks, Ferd & Frank, I have my icons back. I had forgotten trying to regain color in the sidebar by installing SIMBL. Your messages (and the link to the other discussion) reminded me of that. I removed SIMBL and my icons reappeared.

I don't have the exact same problem, but it's similar, so I figured I wouldn't start a new thread.
In Mountain Lion, it seems that custom icons for hard drives don't appear on the side bar of the Finder like they used to. I use video game characters for icons as monikers for each harddrive (and the Mac/ FAT32 partitions of each drive). So not having them in the Finder slows down my efficiency a bit. Any way to get that back?
