To expose the "left panel" go to the View menu and choose "show sidebar".

When the sidebar is hidden the phone should be a button on the right side of the screen just under the Search box when you are viewing the library.

The Mac Address Book is a separate application in the Dock. You must set up the iPhone to sync with it using iTunes, or set both it and the iPhone to sync to iCloud.

The manual covers all of this:

I am trying to do the same thing (edit my contacts in my new iphone 4 directly on my computer so it's much easier than doing it on the phone directly). The only part of your directions that are tripping me up are the part where you go to "Info" in iTunes and then in Sync Address Book Contacts there is something to check to Sync it. There is no option for me to check anything under Sync Contacts. It just says this:

"Your contacts are being synced with your iPhone over the air from iCloud.

Over the air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone."

If I go into iCloud on my phone and turn "off" the Contacts button, it asks me what I would like to do with the previously synced iCloud contacts. Is this even the right next step? I'm confused.

I would appreciate some help on this!

By far the easiest way is to simply have your computer (if it's a Mac) sync Address Book with iCloud also. If it isn't a Mac log on to using your Apple ID and you can edit your contacts in your browser.

If you would prefer to sync with an Address Book app on your computer via a USB cable or over your local WiFi you need to turn off iCloud syncing. You want to leave the contacts on your phone. Then you can set it to sync with your chose app on your computer (of the ones supported).

Syncing with iCloud is much more convenient, however, because any change you make in either iCloud, Address Book on your Mac, or on your iPhone is instantly synced to the other sources. There's no separate sync step.

    Thanks Lawrence,

I signed into iCloud on and when I click on contacts I get a message that says:

"Can't Load Contacts. There was a problem loading the application."

    Any ideas?

Try logging out, and logging in again. If that doesn't resolve it clear the browser cache.
