You can start by updating to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, 10.6 by going to the Apple on-line store and ordering the installation DVD ($20). Install the DVD and update on-line using the Software Update to 10.6.8. That will give you access to the Mac App Store.
Then you can make decisions about do you have the system resources, i.e., cpu, ram and free hard drive space to go to Lion. For that you need at least an Intel Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon preocessor and 2 GB ram and 7 GB free space on the hard drive. If you meet that you can call Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and pay $20 for the download code to go to the App Store and download 10.7.5.
