Did you restore the phone as new or from a backup? What iOS are you running - it says 6.1.1 in your signature and that is a few releases old at this point.

I restored it from a back up. I'm not quite sure which iOS system I'm using, but it's the newest update from Apple for iPhones as far as I know.

You might have corrupt data in your backup file.
Try restoring as new (backup your phone first again just to be safe). Once it's setup as a new phone see if you still have the problem with Messages. If you do, there might be something wrong with phone.
If not, erase all content and settings and restore from your backup. If the problem returns, then it corrupt data and you would have to discard that backup and restore from new again and set up all your settings from scratch.
