You can create a new account without a credit card.
Refer to article here:
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
However, you cannot change your exisiting account into a "NONE" payment account

Just to make this crystal clear, and answer the question you asked.
If you simply want to use iTunes to import your CDs, or MP3s that you have purchased from Amazon or any other digital source, and to manage your iPod - no, you do not need to give any credit card info to anyone. You can even download and subscribe to Podcasts without a Store account.
But, if you wish to purchase anything from the iTunes Store, including free Apps, then you need to set up an iTunes Account by following the link wiclee has provided. There, you are given the option to select "none" as a payment method.

You could start by "clueing us in", have you followed the steps in the article to which wiclee linked? Note the point made by wiclee - that you cannot change an existing account to "none". So the procedure has to followed exactly.
It's no good reading "all these posts" if you don't follow the suggestions made in them.
And by the way, just so you know, the person who started this thread has only ever written one post; this one on the day the user id was created. Since he/she couldn't even be bothered to reply to the suggestion made, none of us know whether he/she found an issue with it.

Yes I did follow the steps given and the "none" option was missing.
So I cancelled and started again. The second time I tried it the option was there
No idea why it wasn't there 1st time. But thanks for replying anyway :)
