Thank you for that reply. I'm aware this is an iCloud forum and my question was slightly off-topic but I just don't know where else to go.
Can anyone help? Online storage is all I want with a drive that mounts to the desktop. It's so stupidly simple I can't believe no company offers this serice!
Syncing is just plain daft! So I've got 2TB of data to back up that I want to regularly access. How on earth is syncing any use? The 128GB HDD on my MacBook Air would be wiped out instantly!

I think Gladinet will do the trick :
"Gladinet Cloud Drive gives you direct random access without the requirement of fully synchronized folder on local desktop. "
"Gladinet Cloud Desktop Client creates a local drive from your Windows Explorer and Mac Finder. You can use drag and drop to upload and download files to/from online storage services. "
I don't like synching myself - rather just copy regularly...

I was pulling my hair out thinking I was the only one who had this problem. I'm an independant filmmaker, so I have about 1TB of video footage that I want to store securely offsite in case of something catastrophic happening. That's IT! I don't want all this file syncing crap where I have to download an app that spreads it's tentacles all over my machine. The background processes on my machines have to run as lean as possible to reserve computing power for editing 4K footage. So I can't have an automatically syncing app running all the time.
I know what I'm doing. I back up my projects while I'm working on them on local drives. But when I'm done, I want to send off these huge project files and the footage somewhere safe, and then clear my drives for the next project. I don't need to sync between different machines and collaborate with anybody. I just want online storage.
Why is that so hard to find from a reputable company!!!
I tried Google Cloud, and I think that would work, but that's really designed for developers. And I don't want to have to sort through all these API's and verification codes and all this stuff I don't need. I just want cloud server space...that's all!
Sorry to spew, but I'm really frustrated. Have you found a good solution?
Sorry trainset, but I've never heard of Gladinet, and I'm just not sure I want to turn over my footage that I've spent thousands of dollars shooting to someone I've never heard of. What has your experience been?

Hey bferguss, thanks for your comment. It's INCREDIBLY frustrating and I regret my answer is NO, I still haven't found a solution.
Somebody suggested Amazon S3 but from what I could see it sounds similar to your suggestion of Google Cloud.
Secure offsite storage is all I need dammit!! I CANNOT believe no one offers this service! Surly it's a no-brainer??!!
Anyway, thanks again. It's good to know I'm not the only person frustrated by this. If I find a solution I'll be sure to let you know. Hopefully you could do likewise?

Could I also just warn you against SugarSync's cloud only folders. I tried out this option a couple of weeks ago but discovered halfway through that stuff was still copying back to my Mac DESPITE having checked the "do not copy to hard drive" box.
Furious, I contacted their tech support who finally admitted that files will copy back to the user's hard drive.. but only in a temp folder!

Yes, I'd met that oddity - I use their 'Web Archive' only for online backups in case of a disaster, and don't expect to do much downloading, so it doesn' matter.
The Amazon looks possible, though I didn't go into a lot of detail when looking at it - and it may be the only place you'll get a really large amount of storage, at least within one account.

From what I can tell, Amazon S3 and Google Cloud are direct competitors, so they're offering basically the same thing. They're provided a service for developers who are making mobile apps that require cloud access to run their system files. As a part of this service, they both offer simple storage. The thing that is great about both of them is they don't have any client-based apps. So no syncing, no automatic processes--none of that.
So again, I guess this would work, but it's just WAY overkill for what I need. And I'm afraid that's reflected in the price. I can get Google down to 6 cents/month per GB. At 1TB, that's $60 a month--$720 a year. That's still far cheaper than buying my own enterprise level server and drives and tape backup system. But it still seems like there ought to be something simpler and cheaper.
But maybe not. Maybe I'm asking too much of the cloud. If you're looking for large amounts of storage, they assume you're a developer I guess, and that's just the way it is. If so, then I'll bite the bullet and just use Google and turn off everything I don't need.

Bumping this up again... I am doing a search right now for this as well and have not yet found a solution. I basically want 1TB in the sky that I can upload files to and share links to people (like Dropbox's Public share option). Dropbox prices seem a bit unreasonable for the amount of storage you get, but more than that, I don't want to eat up my 256GB disk to store the 1TB online! I usually only have about 8GB of storage on my puny 256GB SSD as is, so sync'ing those files locally is just not an option for me.
I basically want a cheap online USB disk, that's it...
Has anyone found something?

Think different.... buy two 2 TB drives. Copy everything to date to one of them and place it in a bank vault. A month (or suitable time) later copy everything to date to the other and swop them over. Each month or interval update the drive you have at home and swop it with the one in the bank. I don't know what the cost of the bank storage would be but I would have though it would be a lot less than online storage (and a lot quicker, too).
(Or buy three 2TB drives and rotate them, two in the bank at a time.)

I already have a 6TB backup unit powered by Drobo, and a 3TB drive backing up the Drobo from time to time. But those are back at my house whenever I'm back in the US... I travel a lot, so I would like to be able to access this all remotely/online. I could potentially just hook up the Drobo to an always-on computer at my house and punch a hole in the firewall to access it, but I won't be home again for another two months to do that... it would be nice to have a slightly less hacky solution.
If I could just buy (2) 2TB drives and throw them onto the internet somewhere with high speed access, I'd be pretty happy, but doing anything like that requires colo pricing which is super expensive.
