Yes, if run by inserting it, restarting with the C key held down, and installing it onto a blank partition or drive.

Hmmm, in other words, the disk will need to be wiped clean, right? After which, I'm guessing I could get emails/pst files by going in the time machine and restoring them.

You can wipe the drive or partition, install a new OS, and migrate from the Time Machine backup when setting that OS up. If you don't use Boot Camp, you can also use the Disk Utility to create a blank partition on the drive and install Snow Leopard onto that.
