Because you're running OS 8.1, its USB Support driver database of supported devices is primitive, compared to later pre-OS X releases. Whether running OS 8.6 or 9.1, my preference was to install the USB Support files from the Mac OS 9.1 Update. As mentioned in that linked Forum topic, the drive won't be detected until a disk has been inserted. Also mentioned is the fact that USB Floppy disk drives cannot read Mac-formatted 800K disks. These are the same Double-Sided/Double-Density 720K disks used in PCs, but formatted on a variable-speed Mac "SuperDrive" FDD to accommodate 800K of data. These disks can be distinguished from the 1.44 MB High-Density disks by having only one hole in the corner with the slide tab to write-protect the disk.
