I have a thread running on this issue but with no response. I have googled the problem and the resulting information is huge - my eyes sort of glaze over. So I'm hoping some kind soul might guide me through some possible remedies. Right now I just keep getting the attached pop-up. If i hit "reopen" the same pop-up appears. I went into disk utility on Command>R and did a permissions and disk repair. This did not help. I did a complete re-install and this didn't work either. I cannot open Aperture either and I have no idea whether the two are related. I have a friendly computer guru but unfortunately he is away on holiday. I need my email! Cheers, jp

If you tried to post a screenshot, please try again. Otherwise describe the problem in more detail.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.

    Back up all data.

Triple-click the line below to select it:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services Reveal

from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected foldernot just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.

Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.

Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

    Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Brilliant! This worked thank you very much Linc. Your instructions are very easy to follow. I can't tell you how good it feels to have my email back. And the email recipient list, which I had lost, is now intact too. Thanks, jp

The email problem resurfaced after a couple of days, Linc. I repeated the procedure you outlined which again fixed the issue. I am hoping you might have some thoughts as to why or how the problem is returning. Cheers, jp

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

    Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Step 2

Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Thank you very much for this, Linc. Seeing all that red makes me nervous! My email hasn't gone on the blink since last reporting so I have not been motivated to implement your fix. I'll wait until I have an unrushed hour or so and then let you know how it went. Thanks, jp

I may not have got this quite right, Linc, especially step 2. Let me know. My Mail failed again this morning. I think the last time was the 30 May which is the crash I have copied. This is this morning's crash. Linc. I'm taking particular note of your instructions not to load excess information. I am following your note that "a few dozen lines should be enough." It is about 10% of the full report. jp

Clear the Mail sandbox again as above, and also do the following.

Triple-click the line below to select it:

    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services Reveal

from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

    Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

This is a desperation move, Linc. I have lost my email recipient list. this is a new thread I posted https://discussions.apple.com/message/21978700#21978700   The fix given in this thread works but only for a short time. The issue may be linked to the "email wont open" thread that you solved for me. Cheers, jp
