Q: iPhone 4 Black Screen But Phone Works

I have used the iPhone 4 (Factory Unlocked) for more than a year now with only minor issues. Like on a usual day I was playing a word game "Rumble" then quit the game, connected my earphones for music & pressed the "Home" button on the phone to unlock it and the screen was Black. This was a sudden shocker!! . I just put the phone to rest for a while & after about an hour crossed my fingers and tried the Home button again but the Black screen continued. So the backlight of the iPhone works I can say that bcoz I see the phone luminates but the "Slide to Unlock" is cannot be seen. Since I have been using the phone for a while I know the exact position of "Slide to Unlock" so if I slide my finger it unlocks too with the default "unlocking (click) noise" but again the icons of the apps cannot be seen, all I see is a fadely luminated grid. I receive SMS's and Calls although I cant read them nor can I see whos calling. Since the screen is blank I cant operate the phone but the phone seems to be working. I hence tried the reboot, restart, shutdown & start again, restore backup, update iOS everything a desperate user would do but nothing has worked till now. There is not much discussion on this issue anywhere hence No resolution. I am gonna visit an Apple  service center today and keep my fingers crossed. I have taken utmost care of the phone. Till date it is scratchless, spotless. I miss my phone .

The same thing happened to me but restarting the phone does not work. The phone itself is working because it can do screenshots while the phone doesn't show anything. It's an original iPhone 4. No jailbreaks and has a version 6.3.1 OS. Maybe it's a hardware problem. Can anyone please confirm the problem of the phone? I'll also include a screenshot.IMG_1196[1].PNG

Same thing happened to me, probably because I dropped mine in the water . After a lot of patience, I finally got the back light on.

The DFU trick for 10 seconds with home button wasn't a miracle for me. I restore the **** thing for about 5 times and got tired. In a last desperate attempt I decided to press the button "restore backup" and chose a random backup I did probably 1 hour ago. It restored and worked again!

Another trick when you can't see what's going on your screen, you can activate the VoiceOver (just press 3 times the home button). After, you can press anywhere on the black screen and the lady will tell you what you press so that you can figure out where you are on the iphone (mine told me "Wifi configuration" so I knew at which step I was.

Last trick to figure out what's on the screen without seeing it, you can just take a picture (hold sleep button and after home button without releasing the sleep button) as simply as that. After just connect your sad black screen iphone to your computer and open iPhoto and go to devices "Iphone". You'll see the picture that you've taken.

Possibility of iphone LCD being broken, or disconnected. There is a shield to hold the iphone digitizer & LCD screen cables in place with the ports they are designated for. Have you had any water damage to the iphone?

i had this problem just a half an hour ago... i was using an app,, then closed it,, locked the screen.. when i tried to unlock the screen after 2-3 minutes,, screen went black... mine was not even making that "unlock screen sound" when i tried to unlock it... i got panicked....

but i kept patience... plugged the charger in... left it charging for a while.... then pressed (power button + home button)...... and yeah,, could see the apple logo... and now its working fine...

It has gone into recovery mode OR just completely broke

To get out of recovery mode:

    1) Hold power button down for 3 seconds

    2) Continue holding power, hold home as well for 10 seconds

    3) Release power button, continue holding home for another 15 seconds

    4) Plug into iTunes, wait to load and press "restore from back up", select most recent back up.

    5) Wait for iPhone to re-sync (about 5 minutes per 1GB of content eg apps, music etc

    DONE!

Your problem is simply the screen to turn it up hold your phone pointing downwards and you should see the screen with very low brightness and all you have to do then is go to your settings brightness and tap the bar your iphone bug will be over with. Hope this helps I have had to do this quite often!!

Try restarting it aka pressing the home button and the power button for 10 seconds at the same time and then turning it on.

Had the same problem just a few minutes ago. Mine was black screen but the network as well as the wifi and time was still on the screen. The Assistive Touch (the square menu thing) is still responsive. What you have to do is to hold the power button and slide to turn off like you do with the normal screen. Your iPhone will now turn off and all you have to do is turn it on again. I hope this helps

I Just Press and hold the Home button (big circle below the screen) and the Sleep/Wake button (on top of the iPhone) simultaneously. It Hard Reseted the iPhone and started my iPhone with all things working fine again

Thank you so much!  I just put it into recovery mode like you suggested and then was able to restore it on on my computer.  You saved me a trip to the apple store, you're the best!
