Delete or transfer data to an external HDD. Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it. It will show you all of your files and the respective sizes. Select the ones that you no longer need on your internal HDD.
A second option is to install a larger HDD. I have a 1 TB 7200 rpm HGST HDD in my MBPs and they are working satisfactorily.
