Wondering whether this is related to TC breaks which is something that seems to come up a lot with tape capture.
Have you tried both the physical cameracontrols as well as the on=screen virtual controls to try and jar it awake?

Thanks for the advice! Yes I did try waking it up with the camera VTR controls FF RR Pause etc. No help.
Could thought on TC breaks, I mainly come from the AVID world. The tapes I have been using do have breaks from when I shot. When I shoot I use drop frame TC and most of the time use the cameras red rec button to start and stop shooting. Like I said though the import is fine you just do not see the preview update. In AVID there is a pref to rec across TC breaks have not found it in FCP.

There have been some problems reported with the apple firewire to thunderbolt adapters. When at the apple store did you use your adapter or theirs? I would try with a different firewire cable and adapter if you can. This does sound like an intermittant situation.

Is the Archive button on the lower left of the Import window available? If so try that. I've had tapes that FCP didn't like (perhaps a hyper-senstive scene detection) and archive was the only way to capture.

I did not try a different cable at the store although I do have 2 firewire to theunderbolt adapters tried both at home same result. The weird thing is the problem goes away buy itself after a few hours. Very Strange. I remember when I had my Panasonic Pro cam and bought my first Aluminum 24" Imac and it would not recognize the that camera back then. Apple seems to always have port issues. I will give PC's a better rating on that:)
Thanks any other thoughts let me know!

I did find that starting a camera archive clears the problem. Sent an email to Apple a while ago but I have not seen an update yet that fixes the bug but the workaround I found by starting and stopping a camera archive works pretty well for now.

Good you were able to find a workaround. It is interesting that the 10.8 System Profiler doesn't report the device, but FCP does see it.
