SMC resetting could solve your problem.

Thanks. I've already reset the SMC with no effect. There is nothing using the CPU or RAM heavily, and the hard drives are definitely fine because they work in Snow Leopard at fast speeds. I'll check the read/write of the hard drives once I am able to reboot into Mountain Lion.

Yeah, I know, but it's a ripoff at $249. Not that I can't afford to buy one, but I don't want to pay that much for an oudated GPU. If anything, I'll be flashing a 5770 (if I can find one for sale) or a newer one not made specifically for Macs... but a good GPU isn't really that important to me.

There's no unusual disk activity. It's definitely the GPU, which is making loud noises.
