Q: how can I select discontinuous cells in an Excel spreadsheet?

I'm using a track pad, and cannot figure out how to select cells that are not adjacent to each other. I tried holding down the fn, control, option, and command keys, but no luck. I haven't used a Mac since 1989, so I'm really a newbie at this. Thanks!
