HT1355 How do you avoid unreasonable roaming charges when traveling in Canada and Alaska while still being able to use iPhone (on AT&T service) for limited phone calling and receiving?

We're going on an Alaska cruise in a few weeks and have been warned about the risk of unknowingly incurring excessive roaming charges on our cell phones. I still need to be able to make and receive calls and would like to use it to check my e-mail. Any advise on how to prevent surprises?
