I'm using 10.7.4, and the brightness was working fine the last few days (since I got the computer), but now when I use the hotkeys I either get a "disallowed" symbol, or I can lower or raise the brightness slider but it doesn't actually change the brightness on the screen.

I can still change the brightness in system preferances, but it's irritating that something on this computer is already not working.

I've tried turning the auto brightness on and off, restarting the computer, shutting it down, turning the hotkeys off and back on, but nothing is working.

It started after I accidentally hit the power button while I was on the sign-in page, which might just be a coincidence. Just in case, though, I've tried hitting the power button again on the sign-in page. Didn't work.

It might be your SIM. My brother has a 13" Air and a friend of mine has the same model with this issue. The SIM is the piece that manages power in the unit and it sometimes malfunctions so it will get confused on how much power goes to what parts. I don't think it can ruin the unit entirely but take it to the Genius Bar. And make sure it can stay cool. I'd suggest getting a lapdesk since the Macs are so enclosed compared to my Dell Inspirion 15.6 inch it can release heat faster than a Mac in my mind.
