Q: Macbook pro mid-2010 Randomly Freezing and beeping

About 20-30 minutes ago my Mid-2010 Macbook Pro just randomly froze while I was watching a video on netflix. I wasn't too concerned until this extremely loud beeping started a few seconds after freezing. It was loud enough to freak me out and wake up my wife who was asleep. After holding the power button down for 10 seconds the computer restarted.

It booted up just fine and ran like usual for about 4 minutes. Then the error screen came up and said that the computer was being restarted due to an issue. A few minutes later the computer was up and running. A glance at the event log shows a wonderful panic. I continued to use the machine and it froze again about 20 min later. This time the beeping was quiter. I powered off the machine and tried to reboot it.

Reboot 1: Black screen with a series of three beeps.

Reboot 2: Sames result.

Reboot 3: Booted to gray apple screen froze before completely rebotting.

Reboot 4: Same

Reset NVRAM..Reboot 5: computer boots up like normal, but it a little slow at first. All seems OK now.

Any ideas on what could be going on?

Here is the log...

    Check out KB Article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547

1 beep = no RAM installed

2 beeps = incompatible RAM types

3 beeps = no good banks

4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)

5 beeps = processor is not usable

Could RAM still be the possible culprate if the issue is intermittent? Everything seems to be working smoothly now.

I'm hoping it is the ram as I was literally about to order a new 8gb set.

Or the HD.  Hard to tell unless your MBP is properly tested professionally.  Apple Store provides FREE diagnostic testing.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.

Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.

Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.

Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

Thank you for the heads up. It has restarted 3 times since my last post including another kernel panic.

It seems to freeze when I move the laptop which is weird, but other times the panic shows up suddenly. My 3 yr anniversry is the second week of June so I better get into an Apple store.

    Thanks.

Well I just got back from the genius bar. After running the basic diag stuff the tech ran the video controller test and it passed with flying colors, yet my compute still freezes when it wants to.

Is there any recourse with this or is paying to have the logic board replaced my only option vs a new machine. Also, apple will only warranty the new logic board for 90 days after the fix. That doesnt sit well with me considering the issues these boards have.

Then you probably have faulty RAM. Run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test (which may fail to detect it.) If you've upgraded the RAM, reinstall the original modules and see whether there's an improvement.

The original ram modules are still installed. Which passed both the apple test and some others I ran.

I'm noticing more and more what is creating the issue. If pressure is applied to the bottom case right under the lower left keyboard it will freeze or restart.

Also if using the laptop on my chest and I rest my wrists on both sides of the laptop it does the same thing.

    Weird.

    That's not a problem I can solve.

Well after everyone kept mention ram I went investigating and determined that the lower ram slot is indeed bad. I used my set of ram and one from my wifes macbook.

When ever a chip is in the lower slot closest to the keyboard, pressure will cause the computer to freeze.

I know this model can only support 8gb of ram anyway, would 1x8gb work?

    Hi Linc Davis,

I am facing the same problem for last 1-year, but could not find any solution.

Can you please share the link/information available on Apple webiste for the replacement porgram within three years of purchase, so that I can ask for the replacement.

One of the AASP told me to call the Apple Support and ask them for the replacemenet. I called the support for the same, but it was refused due to more than 2 years time period (no apple care service was bought).

I bought my macbook pro in Feb 2011 (2.5 years). I am facing frequent freezes of the screen and tried all sort of solutions available on Apple webiste, but all in vain.

    Thanks & Regards

    Ammar

Did you ever figure out the problem? What have you done to prevent the bottom ram slot from being pushed too much? I'm having the same problems as you1
