The iPhone does not have the BT profile that will allow it to pair with a Mac or any other computer.

The only things capable of pairing are BT headsets, car stereos that have BT and some GPS units for the use of handsfree calling.

Not sure why Apple told you it's a glitch. If it's a glicth, it;s existsed for six years and has never been fixed or brought to Apples attention.

I have my iPhone 4S paired with my macbook retina, so hexonxonx's reply is incorrect.

After you pair your phone and your computer, go into network preferences on your computer. Click the bluetooth pan, check that you see your phone and click connect.

    That worked for me.

If I click connect from the phone it tells me that my retina mbp isn't compatible and it forces me to forget this device. If this happens just repair it...

    Good luck

Of course you can use it for tethering as you have explained it. I never said that could not be done.

You just can't send files back and forth using bluetooth from a computer to an iDevice.
