I've had my iPhone 4S for about a year and a half.  Happy with it.  Thinking it's too soon to upgrade to the 5.  However, forgot the charger while away on vacation. Brought just the mini iPad lightening charger which won't work with the 4S so facing walking into the closest Apple store to buy another old charger or just make the switch now.  Is the iPhone 5 really that much better?

I have an iPhone 4 and don't consider upgrading to an iPhone 5 is worth it. Generic chargers and cables can be bought practically anywhere for the price of a couple of coffees.

The iPad mini charger is identical to the iPhone charger, all you have to use is the 30 pin USB cord with your 4S.

The fact that you are happy with the 4s says it all.   The i-5 is a bit faster and has a bit bigger screen.   Is that $200+ worth of "better"?   I had the 4s and have the 5 now.   If I had to pay for them, I'd still have the 4s myself........

I've been using the 4S for over a year and a half (personal) and just recieved an iPhone 5 for business use. I noticie a fairly significant difference in operational speed when sending messages, email, and with overall use and with screen quality with the retina display over the 4S. I also like having a little more screen real estate without it being any wider along with being thinner and lighter. I usually go at least a year and a half with a current phone primarily due to when qualifying for a full subsidy or discount for a new phone with my carrier, but I've been in no rush with the 4S. To each his/her own depending on what is worth it but if you qualify for a full subsidy, you may want to wait a little longer regardless depending on what Apple may announce this summer in regards to the next generation.

I have had an iPhone 4S now for about a year and half and upgraded to an iPhone 5. I went back to my 4S essentially for esthetic purposes.

I find the 4S' make and feel of a more solid construction that weights well in my hand. I noticed iPhone 5 getting all scratched up around the shiny aluminum edge, and IMHO the 5 is just too light.

The crystal-like elegance of the iPhone 4 models evaporated with the metalic look of the 5.

The iPhone 5 is noticeably faster and smoother with a comfortably larger screen. I look forward to what the next iPhone will look like.
