If you want to try to use the old AirPort Express with Mountain Lion, you will need to try a workaround......not supported by Apple, so it may or may not work.....see this thread for details:

May 17, 2013 10:32 AM in response to JCapple70by Ziploc,I use a first gen Airport Express with mountain Lion with no problems. I'm using an Airport Extreme Base Station as wireless router. Try connecting the AE to your computer using an ethernet cable and see if you can get it connected to the network using the Airport Utility then you may be able to use it in wireless mode.

JCapple70 has an older Express that is a "pre-generation" model. It will not run on Mountain Lion unless you manually add AirPort Utility 5.6.
