go to Safari - Help - Installed Plug-Ins
does 'WebKit built-in PDF' show there ? (usually at the bottom of the list)
If so, are there any other mentions of pdf plugins on the page ? (use search, Command F)

Well, maybe I have a larger problem here. I get a blank page when I "go to Safari - Help - Installed Plug-Ins"
Safari opens "file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Plug-ins.html " but nothing is on the page. I can see plenty of plug-ins when I do the same thing on my macbook pro, but the macbook air shows nothing.

yes yes yes. You are so right. I just came back here to update this because I figured out what was happening. I had previously looked for the way to enable plug-ins in safari-preferences-security but didn't see it. After continuing to research this I found i just missed it because it said "allow all other plug-ins". When I checked it, I finally saw the "installed plug-ins" page and better yet, my pdfs are no longer garbage.
I have spent hours and hours over the last few months trying to figure out what was happening. And this week since I am finally in a city with an apple store I figured I would try to solve this one last time before I hauled the computer into the genius bar.
So thank you andyball_uk. I noticed that you were one of the helpful voices on the thread that I used to finally get it to work. A thread from 2008 which I figured could never help me with a mountain lion system, but I was really desperate.
As I have written before and will everytime I get help from these discussion pages. Mac people are awesome. I try to do my part by always coming back when I finally get my problem solved so hopefully it will help someone else. But I don't have the time to read the thousands of requests for help and graciously give that help to those of us who desperately need it. So I am so very grateful that people like you are out there caring about the rest of us.
