pdfs  are just garbage in safari using mac os x 10.8.3  and adobe reader XI (11.0.03)

This is the iphone manual pdf when it opens in safari

This only occurs on my macbook air. My macbook pro running the same software versions opens pdfs normally. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling adobe reader. I have seen suggestions to delete the pdf internet plugin but there is none on either computer.

the pdfs work fine in Chrome but never in safari

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

go to Safari - Help - Installed Plug-Ins

does 'WebKit built-in PDF' show there ? (usually at the bottom of the list)

If so, are there any other mentions of pdf plugins on the page ? (use search, Command F)

that's perhaps due to plug-ins being disabled in Safari - Preferences - Security
