Plug the Ethernet cable into the computer and either the modem or a router, switch, or hub. If the iMac's running Mac OS 9.2.2 or earlier, open the TCP/IP control panel and set it to connect via Ethernet. If it's running Mac OS X, open the Network pane of System Preferences and drag Ethernet to the top of the list.
