If this is a 1998 iMac, it has no native Bluetooth as Bluetooth didn't exist at that time.

So, what do you have or what are you interpreting as Bluetooth?

If this is a 1998 iMac, this is the original Bondi Blue 1st generation iMac.

These only had a 233 MHz, G3 CPU.

I am afraid that there is no way to get this iMac model to be wireless.

There is no faciilities for an Airport card nor was an Airport card available as an option at that time.

There is no Bluetooth options or USB wireless dongle options that will work with this model IMac as the highest OS X version is OS X 10.3.9 Panther. Most USB solutions will only run at the iMac's USB 1.1 speeds and the mimimum OS X version is either OS X 10.4.11 Tiger or OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. Neither of which will run on your model iMac.

You will need to find a way to use the iMac's physical Ethernet connection for Internet access and use if you really want to use this iMac.

It is 'bondi blue' but there are programmes installed with the Bluetooth symbol. Is there a way i can buy a Bluetooth USB and connect to my computer and somehow get Internet?

And if this is not possible how do I set up my iMac so it connects to my broadband. I have the original Ethernet cable and a newer one but when I go into Internet settings it comes up with random things.

We need to start at the beginning.

Maybe this is not a 1998 model iMac.

There were two other iMac models that were colored blue.

If you can boot this iMac, once booted, go up to the Apple logo in the top left of the main menu bar.

    Click on this logo.

There should be a menu option that says About this Mac click on this, tell us the info that appears, there should be a more info button that you can click that will tell us more about your iMac.

I need to know the Mac model ID number, CPU speed, amount of RAM installed and what OS this iMac is running.

FYI, there was no iMac model of this generation that had native Bluetooth. It didn't exist.

Also, an Airport Base Station is a separate piece of hardware that is a wireless WiFI router. It is not Bluetooth, but Wifi. Your IMac doesn't contain an Aiport Base Station. It is a totally separate device.

Any machine that has a ethernet port can go wireless. It may be cheap to buy another computer.

    1. Ethernet Bridge

    2. Please note this requires mac os x 10.5 or greater to configure or windows xp to configure.
Ethernet Bridge  "The versatile Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge can make any wired Ethernet-equipped device a part of your wireless network."  from linksys example: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-RE1000-Wireless-N-Range-Extender/dp/B005FDXMJS/ref =sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314563758&sr=8-1
Once configured, you can use it on any ethernet port.
    3. Airport ExpressAirport Express is an external unit and you can configure it as a bridge.  802.11n ( I believe you will need a more modern version of Mac OS X to configure.  Sadly, Apple uses a configuration program to configure, not a web browser. )

    4.

      Query by serial number

Apple's warrenty database will identify the type of Mac you have.  Your serial number is securely sent, but you get only the name of your machine.

"A serial number is a unique, identifying number or group of numbers and letters assigned to an individual piece of hardware or software. It's used for various things depending on the product / brand but what is your Mac's serial number for and more importantly... what is it hiding and what can it do for you ?"

We are not sure what multi color iMac the OP has.

The OP originally posted that he had the 1998 original Bondi Blue iMac.

This iMac was a 233 MHz CPU that can only go up to OS X 10.3.9 Panther.

The OP doesn't really know anything about this iMac and we need to definitely confirm what this iMac is.

We do not even know how much RAM it has or what OS this iMac is running!

He mentioned that this machine had some Bluetooth software or extensions installed.

It indicates that this maybe an newer model iMac that could have used a USB Bluetooth Adapter.

However, later of these generation of iMac can only go as high as OS X 10.4.11 Tiger. None of these can install OS X 10.5 Leopard. So, there might be a USB Bluetooth dongle that worked or works under OS X 10.4 Tiger.

Until we know what the OP's iMac really is the advice we give Is just speculation on our part.
