Classic 160GB unable to reset

I have a iPod Classic 160GB that I tried to sync, but got a message through iTunes on my laptop that my iPod was not reconginzed. I tried to reset the iPod as well as through iTunes, but I'm unable to reload my music. Can someone point me in the right direction as to how to go into the iPod and manually reset it. Thanks in advance.
