I've heard mixed reviews on upgrading to iPhoto 11. I'm designing a photo book, is it necessary for me to upgrade in order to buy my photo book?

iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Well according to the iphoto 11 website you need OSX Lion (10.7) or higher so 10.6.8 won't work.

iPhoto works on 10.6.8 in fact the iLife 11 box set works with 10.6.8. You will not get all the updates though as later ones needed 10.7 for iCloud intergration amongst other things. Tbh its not a must have and if you have iLife 09 thats good enough. Alot of the bug fixes did come in later updates that need 10.7 onwards. If you buy the box set of iLife 11 if you can find one on amazon though you get to keep iDVD and iWeb. should you ever need to reinstall. These did not come with later Macs with just iLife 11 installed.

The only way to get iPhoto 11 on 10.6 is via an install disk. The version currently on the app store will not run on 10.6.

iPhoto 11 is an excellent mature app now. As to whether you need to upgrade to buy a book depends on the version you have now.
